Question:

The odds of being deployed...?

I know we are in time of war, and I know that most everyone is being deployed now a days, but I have met some who have yet to be. And I was just wondering, what do you think the odds of a carpentry masonry specialist that is enlisted for four years being deployed is? Does it really matter depending on their MOS? Or how does it work? Also I spoke with my husband (he's in basic training right now) while he was in reception and he said that they told him they have changed the ARMY basic training to 10 weeks. Does anyone happen to know about this or know where I can find out if this is true and what his new date for returning will be? Thank you all...

  1. Those carpenters and what have you end up at Engineer units that definitely deploy.  The guys I knew mostly just worked building things on the base.  They were based out of Bragg, 37th Engineer Battalion.

  2. yes, it's true it's 10 weeks. and frankly, odds of being deployed are pretty high. pretty much everyone i know has been deployed, and the ones that haven't are scheduled to go in the next year (they're new ones who just got into the army within the past year...) my hubby deployed within 4 months of getting to his first station.

you will get his graduation date and time in the mail. his commander will send you an information packet about it. also, you should be getting a packet about tricare in the mail (which is medical), and one about how to go about getting your military I.D. All of these came for me in the first month to month and half of my husband being at basic. and from here on out, the recruiter will know pretty much nothing about what's going with your husband. you really have no need to ever contact the recruiter again.

  3. The recruiter may be able to find out what his return date is.  He should also know if they increased the basic training to 10 weeks.

When I was in Iraq I saw some Army engineers building a building and they had carpenters and masons so, yes, they get deployed.

In 4 years in the Army you can expect to be deployed at least once and, probably, twice.

  4. Yes the odds are good right now. Carpentry Masonry Specialist sounds like an engineers type MOS so I'd say the odds are very good. after all carpentry and masonry skills are needed to build schools and churches.

  5. There are VERY few MOS's that really don't deploy much anymore..because of the changing demands of the war...one example is a parachute rigger. there really aren't any MAJOR airborne units that are left over there...so they don't deploy as much.

More so, it depends on where your husband is stationed at. he could go to a unit that deploys as soon as he gets there, or has just returned from a deployment.

Seriously though, deployment should be the last thing on your mind right now....you are getting ready to go through alot of emotional changes while your husband is at basic training, and more so while he is at AIT. You have a LONG road ahead of you as a military spouse..so hang in there.

As for his return date, no, the recruiter can give you an idea...but once your husband gets to his basic training company, he will get info about all that. But, you can look forward to it being October when he gets out.

just hang in there...you need to be his strength!

  6. 10 weeks is right and with his mos for 4 years he will see a min of 2 deployments about a year each and chances are about 99%

  7. Depends on the job you take or how bad they need you. so it just depends
