The old Chamberlain Bridge showed up, said Bret Calhoun after the Bonapaw Stakes win
The 7-year-old W. Bret Calhoun trained gelding, Chamberlain Bridge, came good for his connections in the $75,000 Bonapaw Stakes at about five and a half furlongs over Fair Grounds race track’s turf course on 17 December, 2011, restricted for 3-year-old and
above males.
The veteran sprinter, Chamberlain Bridge, snapped a six losing streak and added to his already million earned in his 6-year-old racing career. Ridden by jockey J Theriot, the multiple graded stakes winner, Chamberlain Bridge, led the race throughout out
its distance to down S Margolis trained, Country Day.
Southern Style followed in behind Country Day to finish third, as Uno Ducksy, Great Mills, Crystal Moment and Strike Impact completed the order of finish.
The Kentucky bred son of War Chant, out of mare She’s Got Class by Trempolino, Chamberlain Bridge’s liking to Fair Grounds turf course is irreplaceable as he has now gone on to land five races in seven starts there.
“He’s had a rough year,” admitted Calhoun.  “Mentally, he didn’t seem to be quite the same this year, so it was nice to see him run a big race today. Maybe this will get his attention a little bit. Maybe this was a little bit of a wake-up call for him today.”
“The ‘Old Chamberlain Bridge’ showed up today,” said winning rider Jamie Theriot,. “He broke very sharp (early splits of 22:38 and 45.52) and just kept going.”
The last race Chamberlain Bridge won was the Rail Splitter Stakes, run over a distance of five furlong on turf at Sam Houston Race Park on 12 February, 2011, where he defeated Goldzar in second and Future Covenant in the third while covered the five furlong
distance in 56.63 seconds.
Prior to the Rail Splitter win, which was Chamberlain Bridge’s first race of his 2011 campaign, he was exiting a victory in the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in 2010 also at about five furlongs at Churchill Downs on 6 November, 2010, where Central City
and Unzip finished second and third, respectively, while Chamberlain Bridge covered the distance in 56.53 seconds.
Chamberlain Bridge couldn’t have capped off his 2010 campaign in a better way.
