the dresses that were worn in the time of jane austen's stories were called what ? and also the dresses with the large peticoat thing under the dress. ?? do they have a specific name ?

you mean the hooped skirts of the gowns, it was called a crinoline, It was popular from the late Georgian to the early Victorian times, Very difficult fashion to get around in, getting through doorways was difficult, and sitting down without showing your drawers was almost impossible,

Believe me, knowing from experience, the period dresses you are speaking of are ones to be admired indeed, but as for wearing them....that's another story. You have to walk sideways through doors lest you tear your gown or get stuck, and when you sit down, well...up goes your crinoline, skirts, petticoats and all - and everybody can see your knickers, to boot.

The time frame you're aiming at is 'Georgian', during the reign of King George IV of the United Kingdom. That large thing under the dress is called a crinoline, it has a stiff frame, sometimes of steel, and it was [and still is] used to hold up all the many layers of lady's gown etc etc etc, keeping it in a desired shape. It's pretty well the same concept as a farthingale used for several centuries before the crinoline.

They're generally called dresses, gowns, or frocks.

I think that the one you're looking for most is frock.
