The one I saw last night was WHITE with a BLACK stripe up the middle of the back. Is this possible?

Smile is 100% right. I thought I was answering a previous comment about skunks; didn't realize I was posting a new subject. After posting the question, I found a picture on the Internet. The animal was definitely a skunk. I was standing about 2 feet from it; it's a wonder it didn't spray me!

it is possible, depending on your location and environment, it could possibly be a new mammal.  but im guessing you just didnt see the bottom half of the skunk(if u r takling about a skunk). if it was at night then it is most likey. (black in the dark is almost like it is invisible.  kind of like a magic trick.)  but then agin it could have been an opposum.

are you talking about a Striped skunk or spotted skunk or a black and white cat.
