Question:

The only morality in a cruel world is chance?

Okay, I've just watched The Dark Knight 3 days ago. At the end of the movie, one of the character said :

"You thought we could be decent men at an indecent time. But you were wrong; the world is cruel, and the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair"

Hm, do you agree with this quote? What do you think?

  1. You can only appear to be "decent" or "indecent", because nothing really matters in the cosmic scale.  The world cannot be cruel, nor is anything left up to chance.  I believe this quote by Rorschach summarizes it all: "Existence is random.  Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long.  No meaning save what we choose to impose.  This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces.  It is not God who kills the children. Not Fate that Butchers them or Destiny who feeds them to the dogs.  It's us.  Only us."

  2. World the world is not cruel because cruelty indicates that the worlds knows we're here and it's acting on purposely, but the world is not. The world doesn't care about you and me, the world runs but it's not being managed.

  3. Film gak usah dianggap serius lah...

Don't have to think about it in a serious manner. Its just a movie.

  4. To me the debate is not about objective morality.

I think that objective morality has never been established.

Instead it is a debate about what objective agreements can be reached about the abstract concept the term is supposed to represent.

To state that morality is chance does not conform to the abstract concept that the term is meant to communicate.

Instead it is an attempt to locate an objective outside source for establishing a term that has no real meaning outside of a concussions mind.

  5. It sounds very good, and the movie is very compelling. Let me just say that I love Batman; however, as entertaining as the new one is it really conveyed a bad message. It definitely shows that men as men cannot be good alone and that they need to become something more. The movie also implies a lack of faith in people to do good. At the end Batman and commissioner Gordon lie to the people of Gotham about Harvey's transformation into Two Face. Why? Because they don't think the people can handle the truth ("Sometime the truth isn't good enough"--Batman [WHAT?!] ). Ultimately, people just can't be moral. So, they need some fearful symbol scaring everyone into doing good. Of course, this make a whole society of people doing good only because their forced to do it not because they really would had their not be some scary Batman gliding around the city. Remember the boat scene? Nobody blew each other up. The Joker was disappointed. Batman says "This town just showed that they ready to do good". Yeah, for all the wrong reasons Batman. Doing something because you're afraid of the consequences doesn't make you good. We don't praise people for this sort of thing. Unfortunately, it takes the scum bag criminal on the boat to stand up and throw the detonator out the window before anyone else (who wasn't a criminal and presumably obeyed the law and were good upstanding citizens). Ugh! Anyways...

Even if morality were left to chance there is nothing that says it won't be just as cruel. In fact, presumably more cruel. If you notice, Harvey becomes consumed by the need for justice to be served. He then lacks any mercy on anyone in the city. And where there is no mercy there is much cruelty.

  6. ((((((((((((((   IT   IS     ))))))))))

    agree

  7. The only morality is.. knowledge & truth.

  8. I would have to disagree. Yes it is a cruel world but then you live cruelly my your own volition, and you accept the cruelty by your own volition.

An unbiased, unprejudiced, and a fair chance morality does not exist.

What does exist are the laws. They govern the morality we have. These are laws that have been carved into stone by hundreds of nations of all civilizations throughout mankind. You do not envy your neighbour, you do not lie, you do not steal, you do not engage in affairs with a married man or woman, you do not work yourself to death, and you respect and honour your parents. These laws are governed in every nation, and social order and about thirty five hundred years ago they were carved in rock right after the first three laws given to us by God. There is only one God, you do not worship idols, and His Holy name is not to be taken in vain.

Now many here will dismiss the first three laws but the rest? They have no morals of chance or otherwise if they cannot follow them.

Morality is governed by laws. If it were not so we would have worse than a fair chance, we would have "moral recidivism", and that is when everyone is wise unto themselves and all have no set standards, but do what is right in their own eyes. Think Hitler, or Bundy. They did what was right in their own eyes.

  9. The world is not cruel, the world is neutral.  What is cruel is humanity.  Humanity is the cause and it is also the solution.  Morality and justice are conceived out of necessity to re-balance the situation.
