  1. People that have not been there only remember what they see in the movies and on tv.

I remember my Vietnamese friends, who I miss greatly!

I remember busy Ha Noi - the noise, the traffic, the hussle, the bussle, and the really interesting things about it!

I remember the quieter towns I visited and worked in - Dong Hoi, Phan Rang, Sapa, and villages.

I remember great food!!! And I remember a couple of dishes for which I have NO fond memories!

I remember the humidity and the heat!! Terribly oppressive. And I remember the terrible, penetrating cold - even though I never saw anything below 3 or 4 degrees celsius in my travels there.

I remember beautiful pagodas and temples, old architecture.

I remember the smell of the markets - sometimes pretty overwhelming, but always an enjoyable visit!

I remember 99.9973987% of the people I met being very gracious, friendly and kind - even if we could not talk to one another.

I remember the beautiful scenery - from lowland rice fields to mountain rice terraces, to villages, to forested mountains.

I remember the incredible au dai.

I remember how difficult tieng Viet can be, and be so difficult to pronounce, let alone hear the tones.

I remember my friends that died in the American war.

I remember the mists rising from a valley about 1 km from our base camp. I remember the air strikes, the incoming mortars and rockets.

    I remember many things.

And most of all, I know I want to go back!

  2. Well, I've been to Vietnam 4 times.

How come they don't remeber much?

well on my first visit, i remembered the heat-d**n it was hot

How the houses were tiny and also closed up with each other

I also remeber all the little Honda motorbikes-they were sooooo fun

But, what i loved the most was the people and how their lives and culture were different to Australians.

    I LUV VIETNAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  3. That's NOT true :)

Firstly, people who know about Vietnam with the war impression are who have never been to Vietnam before :))

Secondly, I think almost people who just know about Vietnam by the war are people with low education, most of them are living in developing countries, they just know Vietnam by watching some movies about Vietnam war (even some "fake" movies). And also because they are low educated, they are almost not rich so most of them have never been to Vietnam, too.

  4. I hate to point out the obvious, but I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that the "American" war ended well before you were born.

The reason that Vietnam is back in the news in America is that we find ourselves in another pointless war in a far away place that will only benefit a very few rich, old, white men. Does this sound familiar? How about the NVA Tonkin Gulf attack and Iraqi WMDs? Both have been proven to be lies.

Stupid men start stupid wars. The "American/Viet War" is over. If some stupid man decides to start another war with Vn, then this former Marine will team up with his former VC, father-in-law, and we'll give em h**l.

  5. Because Americans are stupid mules.

They forget that the sole reason the war began was that the french were having trouble with the locals...

It was an utter pointless war.

  6. given that your premise is true and it is arguably true, i belive it is because the war and knowledege of the war is/was most peoples 1st encounter with vn... i remember the 1st time i heard the word "viet nam"; i was in the kitchen with my mother[ back around 1962] when it came on the radio, " mom, what's viet nam ?" i asked.. later i wound up a soldier there durning my formative years... for 30 years after "viet nam" was nothing but "a war" in my mind and my dreams.. since ive been back [ many times] the war is just something out of the distant passed and viet nam has a whole new meaning to me. many times when i tell someone ,"i just came back from viet nam, or "ive visited viet nam many times" they"ll respond by asking ," were you in viet nam? [meaning the war] but they wont say "were you in viet nam DURING the war ?", they just say "viet nam " like thats all it is/was ,  a war, the war, war....  often i'd like to reply by saying , "yeah , i just told you i came back [ as a tourist]... i understand your point and i think its because the war is/ was most peoples knowledge of viet nam...unfortunate for them... its changing though...

  7. slack jawed yokels.

and the movies stereotype the country.

  8. Thinking of the war is only For those who have never been to vietnam

And for a lot of people who have been there ,I bet everyone wants to come back.

Nice country, nice people. Most of vietnamese are friendly and foreigners are really welcome there.

Vietnamese dont use the word foreigners but they use something like our abroad friends :D:D

I myself vietnam is a really good place to visit but I would say It's not that good to live there for a long time because of the weather ;)

anyway I really love hanoi autumn :( It makes me really sad when listening some vietnamese songs about hanoi .

oops ^^ wanna come back as soon as possible :D:D
