Question:

The optimum weight for a .40 caliber round?

I've decided to carry a .40 over my .380, but now I can't decide on a grain to shoot. I know weights range from 155 to 180, but I want the most effective round for my purpose, personal defense.

  1. I agree with Boker.

It depends on what weight bullet your pistol is most accurate with.

    I prefer 165 gr and 180 gr.

I like to reload both the .40 and 10mm to subsonic, with at least a 180 gr bullet, results are excellent.

  2. I carry one of 2 40sw pistols daily, one I carry 155gr JHP's in, the other i carry 180gr JHP's in. It depends on what weight bullet your pistol is most accurate with, I also handload for target 190, 200 and 220 grain bullets, slow them down to under 1000 fps, and they're the most accurate loadings I've ever shot in any caliber or configuration.

  3. Don't think I'd use the heavier bullet for self defense.  The more important decision is which bullet.  They aren't all created equal and I'd stick to God Dots, Golden Sabres, or SXTs.  The generic hollow points can't be counted on to do what they are suppose to.  These premium bullets are pretty well proven

  4. I like the 165 grain CCI Speer Gold dots. I carried these or the 180 grain Gold Dots in my Glock 23.
