Orthodoxy was around from the beginning.  Until well into the Middle Ages, there was one Christian Church in Europe.  In the mid-eleventh century, disputes between the eastern and western branches of the Church came to a head, and they split, becoming respectively the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.  Although the dispute was based partly on what we would probably consider today very small theological differences, there was also the issue of authority, with the Pope in Rome claiming authority over all of Christendom and the Patriarch in Constantinople maintaining his own authority.  Like Catholicism, Orthodoxy traces its roots back to Jesus himself and the original disciples.
