  1. Immigration records show nine entries. They were all from the Ukraine and very eastern-most Poland (as it is today, back then it was just Russia) and they were ethnically Ruthenians. The name has no extravagent meaning. It literally translates to "son of Dowhan".

  2. From what I could find - there was a reference to Manitoba, Canada - and also references to the Ukraine and Austria.

  3. There are a few with this name of Austrian birth on ancestry.com

This is a pretty rare name.

  4. Why don't you look at Canadian Native American names.  The "iuk" looks that way to me.

  5. It sound like an Inuit name, but I don't know what it means.

  6. If you haven't already, your best bet would be to ask him. The description alone would probably place him in central or northern europe though.

  7. I don't know for sure but it sounds like Aleut (Eskimo).  You might want to check that out.

  8. Looks like Polish, Belarus or Ukraine.

The suffix -uk or -iuk is a diminutive generally used to form patronymics, and it tends to appear more often in eastern Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. So usually you can take off -uk or -iuk and render the name "son of _," and usually the first part of the surname is clearly a first name or occupation, e. g., Martyniuk = son of Martyn, Tkaczuk = son of the weaver.
