The original spelling of Manila in the Philippines was with a double "L". When was that changed?

I have seen a post card of the Pasig River in Manilla, in 1910. A town in New South Wales, Australia has the double "L" spelling.

as they say,those who have written or recorded our history are those in power that time. it could be possible that Manila used to have a double L if we base it on the history written not by the Spaniards then. if we have a history written by Australians, but has not been published nor recognized but it was the real "history" then the Manila with a double is possible.

the original name for Manila is Maynilad which with the turn of the century was turned into Maynila (i think that was during the American regime), as Americans are having a hard time pronouncing it, Manila was adopted as the english version of Maynila. the double L is just a typo.

mommy says double "L" could be typo only. correct spelling for manila always with 1 "L" and always double "P" for philippines.

I seem to remember reading a website which stated the original spelling was Manilla.  But just when you want it I can't find the website now.

My brother lives in New South Wales.  I shall contact him and ask him to locate this town, and approach the authorities for a history of their municipality.   Perhaps, if you are a resident of the area, you may save us the trouble by doing this yourself.

In the meantime, please take our word for it that Manila is spelled as it is, and don't lose any sleep because of this.

I second the motion. Manila derives from Maynila from "may nila" meaning the place where there are nila growing" . That is so far as my instructors and professors and my own personal research goes. Up until now, I have not heard anyone say that Manila derives from Manilla, South Wales. As you said that is a 1910 postcard. The name Manila has been used long before that.

If you insist it was not a typo, stick to your beliefs. If a historian tells me so, I could bow to authority. But not on the basis of one postcard, mate.

We Filipinos know that it was never with a double L. We went to school, and never did we learn of Manila with a double L at anytime in the past.

Post cards are not government-issued documents. If I decide now to produce a postcard with a misspelling of your country and city, and some bloke sees the same 100 years later, I hope he/she will not insist that your country and city  had a name change.

And this is not a silly joke.
