The other side of the world?

Has anyone noticed that "the other side of the world" always seems to be China?

But that isn't the question, this is.

If I live here, 34.5° S, 56°W, where is the other side of the world?

  1. The opposite side of the world from where you are is called the antipodes (which means "opposite the feet").  There are islands near New Zealand called the Antipodes Islands because they're almost exactly opposite from London.

Anyway, to determine the antipodes for wherever you are:

Latitude:  (easy) keep the parallel the same, just change to the opposite hemisphere.  Thus, 34.5°S changes to 34.5°N

Longitude:  (trickier)  If the meridian is west of Greenwich (the Prime Meridian), make the longitude negative, add 180° to it and use that number.  If the meridian is east of the Prime Meridian, make the longitude positive, subtract 180° from it and use that number.  Negative results are west of the Prime Meridian and positive results are east of the Prime Meridian.

    Thus 56°W changes to 124°E.  (56°W —> -56°+180° —> +124° —> 124°E)

So, if you live at 34.5°S, 56°W (near Montevideo, Uruguay), then the antipodes is 34.5°N, 124°E (Yellow Sea, between Korea and China).

For most of North America, the antipodes are in the Indian Ocean.  For most of Europe, the antipodes are near New Zealand.  For most of Africa, the antipodes are in the east Pacific.  About the only places in the world opposite from China are certain areas in South America.

  2. do you live in middle atlantic ocean?

  3. check out this site:

I know that there are other sites similar to this, including ones where, I think, you can enter coordinates, but do not have those ones at easy access.

  4. think straight throught the earth.

    the other side would be 34.5 N 124 E (180 - 56)

  5. We think you go a bit further at maths to sort out that which you think is a puzzle!
