The overview of 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit Tournament – Part 1
The great action of South American and Caribbean beach volleyball teams kicked off on Friday, March 23 in Grand Cayman Island located south of Cuba as the first event of NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit got the green light.
A total of 23 beach volleyball duos (18 women’s and 15 men’s) jumped on the board in order to prove their endeavours.
This is the fourth year in row that the Island of Grand Cayman is playing host to the opening event of NORCECA Beach Circuit, which is supposed to feature some sixteen tournaments in the running season. Different countries associated with North and Central
America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation (NORCECA) will host these competitions.
The Grand Cayman Island is already familiar with the competition but two small Caribbean countries Antigua and Saint Lucia will be featured on the circuit for the first time.
In the men’s section, teams have been divided into four pool; Pool A, B, C, and D. The host Cayman Island entered the competition with three pairings. Likewise, tandems from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, FSM, Guatemala, Louisiana Costal
Area, Canada, and Saint Kitts and Nevis also joined the action.
In the women’s tournament, United States is only country represented by two teams, while Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Canada, Ant Island, Jamaica, FSM, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago, ESA, and host Grand Cayman have only one team each.
In the previous edition of the Grand Cayman Beach Volleyball Tournament, Richard Van Huizen and Josh Binstock of Canada settled for the gold medal victory. The Canadian team defeated Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher in crucial final showdown
of the tournament.
On the other hand, the American duo of Brooke Hanson and Lauren Fendick dominated in the female category and got hold off the title trophy. Fendrick/Hanson were challenged by Mexico’s Martha Revuelta and Xitlali Herrera, who failed to match their performance
with the U.S. tandem and received defeat in straight sets.
Technical Director of NORCEC Beach Volleyball Circuit, Arnaldo Sanchez, stated, “The NORCECA Circuit continues growing and the beach volleyball is becoming more and more popular in the region, especially after the Continental Cup and the chance to participate
for many countries. Cayman Islands event is the first tournament of the year and the organizers make improvements every year. This is one of the best stops and one spectacular scene with a lot of fans.”
The 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit Tournament is a three-day competition and it is supposed to be closed on Sunday, March 25. The Grand Cayman has set up excellent environment for both men’s and women’s competition and the local organizers are hopeful
about the success of this event.
