  1. i'm sure that is what was intended by 'homedepot' when they first started but unfortunatly that isnt always the way things work.  i dont know of too many plumbers that are willing to stop doing plumbing work and go to homedepot for min. wage.

However Menards tends to do a good job hireing people who have a good general knowlegde of the department which they work. I am a electician and they have helped me one or twice.

  2. Most of the departmental associates are not very knowledgable about the reall world applications of what they sell.  Home Depot associates SELL building materials they do not give anything but the most perfunctory answers.  There are few exceptions though.  Occassionally there are associates who possess a very good working knowledge of a given trade however they think and relate as a tradesman would relate to another tradesman.  In other words they gauge their audience and speak to that audience's understanding.

Home Depot has always paid more than the minimum wage hence there are always folks applying for work when I shop there.  They have excellent profit sharing opportunites and last I checked offered even their part-time employees health insurance.  While it is true that a tradesperson can make more money on their own when you factor in benefits such discounted health insurance, profit sharing, crisis intervention, paid training, paid vacations, air conditioned work environments a tradesperson would not be losing much taking a position at Home Depot.

Tradesmen work periods are characterized by peaks and valleys and weeks may go by without a job.  Home Depot is open everyday and seldom do you see a home depot close.

So I say to any would be tradesperson who looks down their nose at Home Depot's employees and their knowledge deficit, in the big picture you're not doing much better than those employees.  Take the time to educate an associate if they are misinformed or misinforming just as I do.  To each one teach one!

  3. Why would any knowledgeable person work for minimum wage?  They could make more as an apprentice to, uh, just about anyone.

I suspect that the reason most people work at Home Depot is because they get to smoke pot all day long.

  4. They are like every other work place..........there's some that pride themselves in doing a good job........and there's others just putting in their time..........I've had good luck most the time.....If I feel someone is full of bs I just search out another.

  5. I am aplumber who can get $35 p h wages

Our local equivalent of you home depot offered my $18 an hour. Do you think experienced people like me would work for that.

My attitude to these places is"In the wrong hands a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous".
