Question:

The perfect serve?

I've mastered the overhand serve. But as volleyball rolled around this year, I figured, hey, I should do some weightlifting to make sure that I'm not some little weakling. But, now my serves are too powerful and flying out of bounds (the back line). Also, how do I get my serve to just skim the net? Do I make contact with the ball when it's lower?

  1. try hitting it easier  =]]

hahah but really-- try this........when you want to get the ball to skim the net make sure you are snapping your wrist and bringing your toss down but still accurately.

    hope this helps!!!!

  2. The wrist action will do it, adding spin to the volleyball.  Aim for the top of the net, when you see it hitting it and going over, you'll know your spin is working.  Also go for the diagonal, with a good spin on it it will cross several players interception.

The wrist action happens upon contact with the ball - you do this with your spikes as well - this means almost a guarantee all your serves and spikes will go in, also the ball will automatically go over a block or the net - should you be aiming too low.

For something different - try the windmill serve - this will give you an appreciation of how much spin you can put on the volleyball. Also it's fun to see this serve - if anyone is hardly doing it...  This will take some practice to get going, but is worth it.

If you think you've covered all the serves?  Then try the left arm serve (or your other arm) - developing it will always be useful, such as being able to spike the ball, even when you are in the wrong position.

  3. a floater that drops as it crosses the net...using the pin hole face it in the direction you want the ball go and hit the ball with an open palm...floaters were considered better serves before spike serving came to be

  4. If your serve is sailing out of bounds you probably need more top spin.

When you toss, reach when the ball is at it's peak and snap your wrist... this will give the ball top spin and will be more likely to hit the top of the net.  Most backrow players have a hard time reading a ball that has a lot of top spin because they don't know when it's going to drop =)

    Hope this helps!

  5. Always go for a high contact! It will give you a better serving angle.

Ok, the solution to your problem is a simple one. Just move back some from the service line. Many good standing servers do this because it will allow your float serve to move more in the air. Or of course, you could always serve slower.

In 2002 the University of Minnesota did a study that suggested that serving slightly below full power is best so that you have speed and accuracy.

  6. No, i have the same problem! What you have to work on is your toss. Im guessing your tossing it right above your head so that your contacting the ball underneath it. That causes the ball to go up, then out. So you want to toss it lower and in front of you, but you need to have a fast arm swing or the ball will go too low and into the net. All you need to think about it hitting the ball at the peak of your toss in front of you while you take one step into it. Good luck!

  7. Very simple.

    Hit the ball behind it.

When you toss it, keep it in front of you rather than above your head.  Keep on trying and when you make it perfectly, remember the exact location of your toss.

  8. Snap your wrist, my coaches always say that for serving and hitting when you contact the ball, the palm should be moving at 60mph and the tips of your fingers should be moving at 90mph, this will give the ball more top spin, making it dip, just spend some time experimenting with serving, try tossing it different ways hitting it at different heights, eventually you'll find one that works well...

  9. Ahh, i had this problem 2 months ago. I play volleyball i had the same thoughts as you so i started weight lifting and the ball continuously went out of court. That's when my coach told me to make it skim the net, to ensure it goes in. Here are some tips:

    1. If you find that your serve is too powerful you may want to take a couple of steps back from the serving line to ensure that the ball is going into the court.

    2. To make the ball skim the net you can either flick your wrist down wards when you make highest contact with the ball and you need to make sure your arm follows through after the hit this will make it go downwards .

Don't lose your power as it is a great serve when it is low and quite hard.

    Hope i have helped!

  10. There are several options.

Actually you want to hit the ball higher.  If it is lower, then you will usually try to get under the lower ball and hit the ball farther.  Hit the ball higher and toss the ball a little farther out front of you.

You should also just step back from the service line.  That would also help.

  11. stand further back

  12. You want to put spin on the serve so it travels downwards. You can do this by putting extra "flick" on your wrist and snapping your wrist down over the ball when you serve/make contact.
