Question:

The phone rings, I pick up - and it's a recorded message?

This seems to be the latest stunt in Australia. At the end of the message is a suggestion that you "Press 1 for more details" (and I'll bet that costs $5 per minute!).

Anybody know anything about these calls and how to stop them?

  1. We get sort of the same thing but music like you are on hold. If you have caler id or ring phone company and get number.  Then go to goggle surch their number find their web site and send about 1000 spam letters (in 1 hit) i know thats a lot but it can make their systms crash funny for you but not them. That might get them to stop.

  2. They are done by companies as a cheap way of calling you up to advertise a product. It happens in here in the UK as well. You can complain to your phone company, and to the phone governing body (Like OFCOM in the UK), but apart from that there's little you can do but put the phone down as soon as you realise it's a recorded message.

  3. no sorry why dont you call your phone company and ask them about it! theylle definately know!

  4. Just hang-up at the beginning of the pre-recorded message, why listen to BS?

  5. scary

  6. I'm not sure how if it's the same in Australia, but here in the USA it's usually one of 2 things: a telemarketer or a bill collector.

  7. I get up to 4 & 5 of these a day.Even as late as 8:30 at night.I have just about quit answering the phone at all & that's a shame since i pay for it.Mostly i keep it for my own use.Wish i knew how to stop it too.I tried Caller ID but that's no help.

  8. whocalledus.com

  9. There is no way to stop them, you just don't answer any call you don't know. Or if your phone lets you, you restrict all calls that aren't in your contacts, that is what I do.

  10. Answer: Wait for your answering machine to take it then delete the message later. No charges on the phone bill.

  11. If you have a caller ID, then you can avoid those calls.  After a while, they should stop calling you.

  12. In the U.S., you can put yourself on a "do not call" list for telemarketing.  I am not sure about Australia, though.

  13. Been hearing this c**p for years.  It's automated telemarketing.  I just don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number.  The second it goes to voicemail, they hang up.

  14. They are either collection calls or telemarketers, hang up, its not worth it. If you have a national call list you may see if you can get your name removed.

  15. The best thing to do is to just hang up. You are probably correct in assuming that pressing something will cost money!

I'm in the UK, and we have a similiar thing whereby a recorded message tells you that you've won a holiday or something similar.

As for stopping them, you may be able to ring your telephone provider and ask for your number to be placed on a "no spam" list.

  16. That's precisely why I let all my land line calls go to the messenger.

All my friends have my cell number.  If I were to get an important call on LL, I can always return it.

  17. do you have a fax line that's probably the reason why that's happening to you

  18. There might be a 'do not call list' that you can request your number be added to, but that doesn't insure it. I get these calls too (U.S.) and my number is on the list but sometimes they call anyway.

  19. sometimes if u call the # then it goes 2 a thing that lets u take ur name off the list of peeps 2 call.

  20. Those phone calls are normal in the United States. Many companies use them now so they don't have to pay employees to make phone calls all day. Also, telemarketers often use them and once you push 1 for more details you are connected to a real person.

There is a national do not call registry that you can put your phone number onto. Here is the link: https://www.donotcall.gov/

  21. Hang up on it, we get them all the time here in the U.S.

  22. we get them in the US all the time....just hang up....easy solution or join the national do not call list...

  23. they are tellemarketing calls you can try to contact the do not call  company enforcers or visit https://www.donotcall.gov/

but some people will put you on an automated call list and do it anyway I am not sure how to stop this? Which I could be more help
