  1. The accomodation ladder is generally located astern by the accomodation block on freighters and is fixed. The gangway can be moved to any location along the rail to land on the dock.


  2. The gangplank, or as it's more commonly called now the gangway, comes in many shapes and sizes.  For most yachts, you now board by the swim platform, which has steps or ladder to the main deck.  A few have folding steps that attach to the hull, and are folded and stowed when at sea.  On bigger ships, they have dock side ramps, and boarding platforms.
