What's the point of having the neutral gear in an Automatic Transmission? What does neutral actually do and is there a specific reason we use it?

  1. The question should be..why is there park? We can put the trans in neutral and put on the parking brake, right? Nope, too many dumb..ooops, consumers forget to pull the brake and away the car goes, rolling down the hill with no driver.

    So....

Park and neutral are the same other than the safety feature related to park. When the vehicle is put in park the trans gears are locked in place, which prevents accidental roll away.

  2. If your car breaks down and you need to push it, the only gear you can push it in is neutral, if your throttle gets stuck you can put it into neutral very quickly before turning it off, neutral has many uses, it is simply disengaging the engine from the transmission so that when the tires spin, the engine doesn't

  3. So the car can be moved not under its own power if need be.

  4. Have you ever had to push a car? Guess not

  5. tow truck one good reason - maybe you can them pull it in park for you
