Question:

The polar bears are dying?

the polar bears are dying out because their natural habitat is being destroyed, but there are polar bears in conservation parks and zoo's across the world. My question is :

what is the point in conserving the polar bears if there is no habitat to return them to?

They could not possibly be fulfilling their role in the eco-system while living in a zoo in Australia, and to relocate them would further damage the natural eco-system. I guess this relates to many other species too.

p.s I am an animal lover

  1. Your premise is false. Go to the arctic circle and educate yourself instead of listening to other peoples lies. Their habitat is fine and it is not all that hard to confirm, if you can't travel  there just call somebody that lives in the north and ask them if they are still surrounded by ice.

That's why it is so hard to argue facts with all you AGW screwballs, reality could reach out and slap you in the face and you wouldn't take the time to figure out why your cheek is stinging.

  2. I do agree and care.

Global warming -- a gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures -- is now well documented and accepted by scientists as fact. A panel convened by the U.S National Research Council, the nation's premier science policy body, in June 2006 voiced a "high level of confidence" that Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, and possibly even the last 2,000 years. Studies indicate that the average global surface temperature has increased by approximately 0.5-1.0°F (0.3-0.6°C) over the last century. This is the largest increase in surface temperature in the last 1,000 years and scientists are predicting an even greater increase over this century. This warming is largely attributed to the increase of greenhouse gases (primarily carbon dioxide and methane) in the Earth's upper atmosphere caused by human burning of fossil fuels, industrial, farming, and deforestation activities.

Average global temperatures may increase by 1.4-5.8ºC (that's 2.5 - 10.4º F) by the end of the 21st century. Although the numbers sound small, they can trigger significant changes in climate. (The difference between global temperatures during an Ice Age and an ice-free period is only about 5ºC.) Besides resulting in more hot days, many scientists believe an increase in temperatures may lead to changes in precipitation and weather patterns. Warmer ocean water may result in more intense and frequent tropical storms and hurricanes. Sea levels are also expected to increase by 0.09 - 0.88 m. in the next century, mainly from melting glaciers and expanding seawater . Global warming may also affect wildlife and species that cannot survive in warmer environments may become extinct. Finally, human health is also at stake, as global warming may result in the spreading of certain diseases such as malaria, the flooding of major cities, a greater risk of heat stroke for individuals, and poor air quality.

Climate change is very likely having an impact now on our planet and its life, according to the latest installment of a report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). And the future problems caused by rising seas, growing deserts, and more frequent droughts all look set to affect the developing world more than rich countries, they add. The report is the second chapter of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment -- the most comprehensive summary yet of research into the causes and effects of climate change. Factors

    Greenhouse Gases

The increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activity is often cited as one of the major causes of global warming. These greenhouse gases reabsorb heat reflected from the Earth's surface, thus trapping the heat in our atmosphere. This natural process is essential for life on Earth because it plays an important role in regulating the Earth's temperature. However, over the last several hundred years, humans have been artificially increasing the concentration of these gases, mainly carbon dioxide and methane in the Earth's atmosphere. These gases build up and prevent additional thermal radiation from leaving the Earth, thereby trapping excess heat.

    Solar Variability & Global Warming

Some uncertainty remains about the role of natural variations in causing climate change. Solar variability certainly plays a minor role, but it looks like only a quarter of the recent variations can be attributed to the Sun. At most. During the initial discovery period of global warming, the magnitude of the influence of increased activity on the Sun was not well determined.

Solar irradiance changes have been measured reliably by satellites for only 30 years. These precise observations show changes of a few tenths of a percent that depend on the level of activity in the 11-year solar cycle. Changes over longer periods must be inferred from other sources. Estimates of earlier variations are important for calibrating the climate models. While a component of recent global warming may have been caused by the increased solar activity of the last solar cycle, that component was very small compared to the effects of additional greenhouse gases. According to a NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) press release, "...the solar increases do not have the ability to cause large global temperature increases...greenhouse gases are indeed playing the dominant role..." The Sun is once again less bright as we approach solar minimum, yet global warming continues.

GLOBAL WARMING HAS TO STOP BEFORE WE ALL DIE.

HUMANS MADE THIS MESS AND HUMANS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN CLEAN IT UP!

  3. Last time I looked polar bear populations were either stable or on the increase.  Sounds like they are doing fine.

  4. In 1974, the polar bear population was estimated to be 5,000.  During the last count in 2001 it was found that their numbers had dwindled to a meager 25,000.  At this rate, you will soon have to travel all the way to your local Wal-Mart dumpster to see them.

  5. stop drinking the koolaid, kid.   There is nothing wrong witht he arctic right now.  There is plenty of sea ice.

Polar bears will follow the food.  If the sea ice disappears, the seals will have to go to land to pull out of the sea, where the polar bears will gladly eat them.  Plus, polar bears are only estimated to have been around for less than 100,000 years.  Which is less time than the "human" species, so what is there to worry about?

  6. NO!  It's true the polar bears are dying!  I brought one home from Florida as a souvenir and it only lived a few minutes when I got home!  I dont understand it at all, I kept the water in the tank clean, fed him plenty of fish flakes, had a heater on, but when I went to my therapy session, I came home to find him floating upside down at the top of the tank.  I tried mouth to mouth resuscitation, and sledgehammer CPR, but nothing worked!  The polar bears are dying!  We need to panic in an environmentally friendly manner immediately!

  7. I do not know what to tell you. There is really no way you can research this on your own. At some point you are going to have to believe those who actually know what they are talking about. Most of those teaching this stuff have never been to an Arctic habitat. Most have never seen a polar bear in real life. Most people are repeating what someone else has repeated from someone else...

  8. Actually, the total number of polar bears is greater today than at any other time in recent history.  The biggest reason that they maybe dieing off is that there is not enough to handle this population increase.

  9. if we clone animals people shout don`t play god

,but deciding to let a specie die out is also playing God

In principle all species are interdependent on everything else ,including US

So to let a specie go may have as yet unseen repercussions.

Polar bears could adjust and come further south to land (the ones that survive)

And start eating people which is the next item on their diet

( there are too many People as it is,That is part of the problem ,another part is their behavior.)

But I suppose some folks may  object to that

3000 animals have gone extinct in the last 50 years

we are witness to the first mass extinction since the dinosaur

All in All it is a very sad situation and we do not have the means for real solutions except to try and take care of what we got

And to rectify what we are doing wrong as much as possible ,such as non sustainable farming, wasteful utilization of bio resources ,bad design with urban growth,

    deforestation,destructive industry and pollution

It will not be long when we have to focus on our own survival,

We are emotionally touched by the big animals ,giraffes ,Elephants ,Tigers and so on ,

But on a lower level thousands are going extinct as well   which are just as important .

Insects can be even more important than polar bears when it comes to the equilibriums of Eco systems

O woe is all i can think of to say

What is even sadder is how many people are totally ignorant of what is happening to nature as the answers indicate here

Watch the BBC documentaries by David Attenborough

he did about 15 movies called Planet earth

the ones called Future ,the ice worlds ,from Pole to Pole ,

covers the poles and shows footage of polar bears swimming

All 15 movies are great, these people have been making nature movies for many years and they show and talk about the differences of what they see today ,

    compared with before

They say whole migrations of millions of animals in the tundras have disappeared in just 5 years.

And everywhere they go people talk about certain species not being there any more..

thousands of species of frogs have gone ,world wide.

this is very significant because they are indicators of pollution because their skin is very absorbent, and they are sensitive to environmental changes.

  10. I know they are learnt it in biology..sucks don't it

did u also know the great barrier reef off of australia is dying?? =[
