Question:

The police are looking for someone who fits my general description, but won't give me any information?

I walk my dog at night, and last night I got a heavy amount of police attention. They would pull up to me and turn on their lights and seemed irritated that I didn't run. They tried this multiple times last night. Motors revving and tires squealing, they were doing laps around me last night.

I called their division headquarters to tell them who I am and to see what's up.

They said that they are looking for someone who fits my description, but they refuse to tell me anything more.

How can a citizen find out what crimes have been committed by someone who looks similar to them?

I've messed around on the PD's website, but I'm painfully incompetent with a computer... I don't know where to look.

Thanks for any help.

  1. something similar happened to me, i went up to the cop and asked him what the problem was. Don't be rude or a jerk about it, this also lets you get his name and badge number, if it continues beyond a rational amount of time. Once they have confirmed you are not the person you are looking for, they are commiting police harrasment. A cell phone with a video camera is a great way to collect evidence for this

  2. there are so many crimes that are commited on a daily bases that it would be almost impossible for them to tell you all of them..

I wonder why if you looked like the person they were looking for WHY didn't they stop and talk to you...

  3. They won't tell you a thing. They don't have to tell you a thing.

  4. unfortunately you can not find that information out unless you know someone... that stuff they like to keep confidential...

one way to find out though actually their are a couple..if you real serious about finding out

1 follow the police logs in the local news paper... or follow the local news...

other than that.. its a privacy law.

  5. Of course this depends mostly on where you live, but generally speaking, the police are not required to divulge anything about an active investigation to the public.

Speaking for myself, I am happy to co-operate with any officer in my community who wishes to stop me & ask me questions about myself if it helps him/her to eliminate me as a potential suspect if I happen to fit the description of someone they are looking for.

But what you described appears to be a pattern of behaviour bordering on intimidation of a private citizen (yourself), by the police & needs to be reported to whoever oversees police conduct in your community.

You will probably find that this won't occur again where you are concerned, but if it does, make a point of noting the number of the police unit involved, & if possible get the badge number of the officer(s) as well.

But as I was saying before, I wouldn't take it so personal if the police get momentarily interested in me as a possible suspect & then move on, just because I may fit the description they were given by someone. They are just doing their job, so be glad they are out there protecting your neighbourhood.

  6. I dont think ther eis a way for you to find out what crime was committed cause its private and they wont devulge info out to the public.  If you didnt do anything wrong then dont worry about it then.  Im sure it must be annoying though.

  7. change your looks.

  8. It is a case of mistaken identity. Get a lawyer and sue for mistaken identity.

  9. Go down to the PD station in person, and tell them the same stuff you told them over the phone.
