  1. 3.  "The Soviet Union was an atheist state, in which religion was largely discouraged and heavily persecuted."

  2. They ban and forbid, reminds me of a political party that is working towards that way in the US

  3. That's an interesting question.

The answer your teacher is expecting is 2 - but all of them are true.

During the war the Orthodox church was almost co-opted as a state religion.

Many churches were forced to close - and many were dynamited.

and some church schools and seminary colleges did remain open.

  4. 2, big time.

In the USSR, there was once a Museum of Atheism, which was put inside Our Lady of Kazan church in St. Petersburg.  It had all kind of art dedicated to attacks on the Church and Christianity in general - any dirt that could be dug up, it was placed there.

The building of this place was officially desecration, so it could not be used for worship.

After the fall of the USSR, the Museum of Atheism was abolished, and the church reconsecrated.  But even today, there are only 4 faiths which have official legal status in Russia.
