The political geography? ?

I'm doing an assignment on a fake country. This country is divided up into ten states; the state government is of a similar political complexion. Ok state A, C, D and E have the same political party as for the nation as a whole. States B, G and J are ruled by the main national opposition party. States F, H and I have independent party governments, which tend to adopt fairly fundamentalist positions in relation to matters of social and religious policy.

ok State I actually is seeking to establish itself as an independent nation. However, State I has the highest population of older people 65 yrs and older, has the highest labour force and has the lowest access to health care.

If this situation was true what would happen in the real world? What happens when a country has so many governments for different states? What happens when a state is poor but wants to become independent? Why would it become independent? I don't understand :s

  1. I really don't have an answer to the 1st question.

    2nd question: see U.S.A.

3rd question: See American Civil War. I don't think the state would actually be poor, it just has a different economic strata.

4th question: Typically a state wants to separate when it feels it is being taken advantage of (it's high tax base is paying for every one else's care or their poor labor is making the business people in the other states rich) or it feels unfairly controlled by the other states through the federal government (i.e. ethnic differences, legislative ideals).
