The position of the cover timing mark?

do you know the (outside the cam) cover timing mark position? I 'm fixing the timing belt and only found "UP" and 2 marks at the both sides on the cam but not sure the right position to place. on the crank theres also only a small mark but could not find the right position to place cause no mark out side to match. i got the timing alignment problem now. help please

  1. put number 1 cylinder all the way up, then turn the crank up to that mark, that should be top dead center, and on the cam, there should be a guage hole on the sproket, put something like a drill bit it, so the cam wont turn, when your putting the belt on.then all you do is take the bit out and adjust the tensioner, put the cover back on and time it.

  3. buy a manual . every car is different ! the engine needs to be set at top dead centre & the cam marks lined up . a lot of engines use the top of the head to align the marks on the cam with . try setting the crank at TDC & the cam with up in the up position & both marks flush with each side of the top of the cylinder head . And it would help if you told us the type car & engine !  TRY looking up the type of engine on the net
