    Because if the diffusion is passive then the rate of passage of molecules is slow.

    In active transport, specific molecules in the plasma membrane facilitate the transport of the foreign molecule inside the cell and hence enhance the rate at which it is transported inside.

    Also active transport consumes energy (which is required for increasing the rate) where as passive transport does not.
