  1. Gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide wil pass through the membrane via diffusion. Certain ions required by the cell will cross the membrane via active transport. Water crosses the membrane via osmosis. Active transport is the only process which requires energy to work.


  2. Diffusion does not necessitae a membrane. Osmosis does however, but refers to water molecules.
