  1. Well, if you are alone you could leave the utensils alone  and use your hands lol.

  2. pretty much the same as other places.  watch what people around you are doing, then mimic them.  by the way, people put their piece of bread on the table, not on their plate.

  3. If you are asking about the actual act of eating from a plate, Parisians as in most European capitals, eat in the continental style which is using your fork in your left hand and your knife in your right hand.

The American/British way is to cut your food with your fork in your right hand and using your knife in your left only to cut food.  Once cutting is done, they place their knife down and change the fork to their right hand.  Awkward and a little primitve as it how people ages ago deal with large pieces of grilled or boiled meat.

Most refined people eat in the continental fashion; it also looks much more elegant so get some practice if you need to, you will be much more comfortable in a Paris restaurant.

In Paris, you should try to eat in restaurants like the Parisians.  This means that you should make a reservation.  I don't recommend you make a reservation before 8:00 pm or you will label yourself as a tourist.

When you order, this is typically the order in which they eat:

order an aperitif (kir or kir royale is the most popular; champagne or spakling wine with Framboise (raspberry liquer or Cassis).  Then order your appetizer "pour commencez" (to start).  Then you main course, wine, bottled water).

The next course is the cheese course which is typically on a cart.  After the cheese course comes the coffee and dessert (again, usually on a cart with several selections).

    That's how it's done.

Do not order coffee before you have had your meal or to consume during your meal.  It looked down upon as "gauche".

Do not cut your bread with a knife - break off small pieces and butter each piece (from the butter you have placed on your bread plate) as you eat it.  Many less sophisticated establishments do not provide bread plates and it is acceptable to put the bread on the table.  They actually have a contraption designed to pick up the crumbs.

Remember, the later you eat ... the more interesting the clientele will be, at least in my experience.  I actually lived in Paris and have learned from experience.

    Bon appetit!

  4. Wipe your mouth every time you go for your drink.

  5. You eat with a fork and knife in Paris. It's a lovely city with some of the best food that I have ever had.
