The race for St. Louis Cardinals' manager is on – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager Dan Mozeliak and principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. on Monday declined to reveal if there was a manager they had in mind to succeed Tony La Russa. Managing experience, however, for both remains the prerequisite and they
are looking for a host of profiles for now.
In fact Mozeliak went a step further and said that profiles have been looked at. “It's not one picture," Mozeliak said. "There's multiple profiles that we've looked at." While both were apparently disinclined to say it plainly, there was a hint they want
someone who has served in the Major Leagues.
For the principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr., there is no rush to pick a new manager in the given circumstances. His prime insistence was on the fact that this was a winning side therefore it is necessary to get the right guy for it.
“I think it's critical that you get the right guy," DeWitt said.
There are no words that exactly point to the time period of hiring the manager either. While there is a general manager’s meeting scheduled in mid-November and that time as DeWitt stated was not specifically for this issue.
When it comes to choosing the manager from within or outside, he was of the view it could be anyone, leaving an impression that it will be solely restricted to within the Cardinals’ itself. The thrust for now is to choose a good leader.
"We want somebody who's a good leader, has had some experience managing and would fit into the organization, and understands our club and would be able to take us forward," DeWitt said.
Former Washington Nationals’ manager Jim Riggleman and the Atlanta Braves former coach are the potential names that could get their names for the slot of St. Louis Cardinals’ manager in the days to come.
But nonetheless, whoever gets the opportunity; the responsibility on his shoulder will understandably be huge, making it imperative to keep the highly successful legacy of La Russa alive. It will be interesting to see who gets shortlisted for the position
of manager for the Cardinals. Time will if the Cardinals make the right decision for manager which has the potential of making a serious impact for the 2012 season.
