I have disconnected and reconnected the vcr, and changed the batteries in the remote. When I go to main menu, the selection just keeps flipping to each option. It won't stop and won't let me select anything. This is a Sanyo vcr. I know, not top of the line but money is tight.

  1. well either you continue on with your problem and it not be solved or chance damaging the remote upon inspection by taking it apart. Take the remote apart carefully and inspect if there's anything lodged between the buttons. IF something was spilt on it, clean the board off with a short haired acid brush ( http://www.jlindustrial.com/ProductImage... )and some denatured alcohol. Isopropyl will work fine too. If it doesn't work, well then you really only lost out on some materials.

Also, Make sure that the buttons on the VCR are not sticking and that it freely clicks when you push it in, though there still could be a problem with the switch/button even though it does click freely.

Also, since you can't afford TIVO, there is another option besides TIVO...it's called a video capture or tv tuner card. install it in your computer. it's does wonders and mine has a FM radio tuner also. If you're using your VCR with an outdoor antenna, keep in mind that TV analog singals broadcasted over the air will end in a year or two and will become digitally broadcasted, so if you go the option of the tv tuner card, make sure it will tune the digital broadcast stations for the near future. If you live in the USA, make sure you get the tuner card that is NTSC not PAL.

One more thing,.....check with tv repair shops, circuit city, best buy, garage sales. usually you can pick up Sanyo vcr remotes pretty cheap. Heck I bought a VCR with a remote a few years ago at a garage sale for 5 bucks. Best deal ever and lots of people are getting rid of their VCRs. A programmable universal remote will work for the normal functions, but might not work for programming the VCR.
