Because of this associotion, how did the south view the election of Abraham Licon as president.

  1. Lincoln did not win a single southern state.  The 2nd time he was elected, there were no southern states, and his rival still took the southernmost states in the union (KY and NJ).  

    Lincoln was seen as quite liberal, and the southerners claimed "I'd sooner vote for a blue dog than a Republican that freed my slaves."  This is where the term "Blue Dog Democrat" comes from.

  3. The election of Lincoln was actually cited by many states as their reasoning for leaving the Union. I think it is ironic that the party that, up until the late 1970s, was for the oppression of minorities (especially black people) is now the party of choice for most minorities (especially black people). In fact, gun control laws, one of the main missions of the Dems, were actually started by Southern Democrats in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to keep the black population from becoming armed and defending themselves from persecution by Democrat sponsored groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
