Maggio was full of praise for his teammates for putting in a spirited display against the current European and World Champions, and stated that confidence is high.
Expectations from La Nazionale dissipated to a great extent after their heavy loss in the warm up friendly to the European championships. They looked out of sorts against a well drilled Russian team under the tactical acumen of
d**k Advocaat. The match took place on the 1st of June, with the Russians winning 3-0 against the Italians.
There was a lot of negative criticism levied at the national side, with ex players and former coaches playing down the chances of the 2006 World Cup winners.
However, this might have worked in the favour of the Italians, and the players would have felt that they needed to prove a point that they were not down and out. Prandelli’s men chose the opportune moment to stamp their authority
on the tournament with a convincing display against the reigning European champions.
The match was played in the city of Gdansk in the PGE Arena, and the Italians took the lead through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Iker-Casillas-c16815. However, they could
not secure the victory as the Spaniards levelled scores through Cesc Fabregas.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christian-Maggio-c9098 was revelling in the result and the display and even though he was disappointed at not finishing the match off, he felt the result was a good one for the confidence within the team. he was quoted to have said:
“The match with Spain was very good for our self-esteem. We have started the Euros well and that is a sign that we have already turned things around after the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Russia-c2991 game. The match [against Spain] started well for us and if they hadn’t equalised immediately
then we could have even secured all three points.”
Having tackled http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011, Prandelli’s men now turn their attention to Croatia and Maggio was wary of the threat posed by the Vatreni, and mentioned:
“But now we have to think about http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879, a completely different team to Spain and in great shape physically."
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 meet the Blazers in Poznan at 17.00 GMT on the 14th of June.
