    A whole note has no beams, nor a half, nor a quarter.  Quarter gets one beat.

    Below quarters, each beam added cuts the note value in half.

    One beam 1/2 beat (eighth note)

    Two beams 1/4 beat (sixteenth note)

    etc. until you go cross-eyed, there's no defined limit.
