  1. It all depends on how those rivers are being polluted.  MOST surface water pollution comes from storm water runoff of streets, parking lots, and other impermeable surfaces.  One way of battling this is to increase PERMEABLE surfaces everywhere you can.  Green roofs, permeable pavement, detention swails in yards, and many other techniques can minimize the amount of water that moves horizontally. If you let the rainwater move into the earth, instead of letting it runoff and carry sediment / oil / pollutants, you will greatly reduce the pollution going into streams.  Also, find out if your town uses CSO's (combined sewer overflows) which discharge sewage into rivers when heavy rainfall events occur.  These cause biological contamination, and are very nasty.  Seperated sewer / storm water systems are ideal and are the new standard.

If you have CSO's, than talk to your local representative to see what you can to to increase public awareness of the problem.

Also, find out if there is a local watershed group in your area.  They have stream monitoring techniques that can tell more about the oxygen levels and give you a better idea of the stream health.

    Hope this helps!

  2. Heavy industry that pollutes rivers are in economic trouble in the U.S. nearly across the board.

The best bet is to phase that business out.  Then use economic, environmental and federal funding (grants, development loans, EPA restoration funds, etc.) to clean up the river.

The next step would be promoting the tourist and scenic aspects of the river -- drawing in bird watchers, hikers, canoeists, fly fishing fans, etc.  This would bolster the various river tied economies on numerous levels.  Even create a "River Days" festival or other community event!

The link below is a great resource.

  3. Yes stop supporting any business that pollutes the water ways, create an organization that cleans and protects the water and than the rivers natural beauty will entice people to spend money just to look at it.

But are you like most concerned environmentalists you just want to talk about it or will you do something about it.
