  2. C. Octavius (later Augustus) was born on 23 September, 63 BC, the son of a Octavius, husband of Atia, daughter of C. Julius Caesar's sister, Julia, making him J. Caesar's great-nephew.  When Caesar dies on 15 March, 44 BC of 23 stab wounds, his will names Octavius as his adopted son. There was a power struggle between Mark Antony (Caesar's right-hand man), L. Cassius Longinus and M. Junius Brutus (members of Senate who had murdered Caesar) and Octavius. For fourteen years he had many battles, power plays, and alignments which ended when Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide August, 30 BC. Afterwards, he showed himself to be a political genius, more than even Caesar, in a slow and careful acquisition of authority in every area of public life. 16 January, 27 BC Octavian was named Augustus, a word with religious meaning (augur) and social meaning (auctoritas).  In 13 or 12 BC, Augustus became chief priest (pontifex maximus) and in 2 BC, he was granted the title "Father of his Country" (pater patriae), he has a famous quote: "I found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble."  Among his building are the Forum and Pantheon.
