Question:

The sea level is said to be rising?

Where and how is it measured?

I think the idea that the level rises because the polar ice cape is melting is nonsense, every school boy knows, ice takes up more space than water, so the level should fall.

Take into account land erosion, and the whole thing about measuring the sea level is nonesense.

And don't even start me on the Lunar cycle.

  1. ..dunno if you saw a time team special the other week? they were excavating bits of the north sea - proving that it has not only been vast land plains connecting the uk with europe, but that it was lush and highly populated. and aerial pictures from around the globe showing many areas of the same sea level that would have been land at the same era or eras.

artifacts from before the last ice age, and from 700,000 years ago! all part of the great cycle of geological eras!

i loved it cos it fits in perfectly with my view on where the noah's ark story may have some roots in actual history, because most civilisations are near water - even today!

  2. Well the thing about the ice taking up more space than water, about half of the iceshelves that are breaking off are above the water.  When it completely melts it will add to the overall sea level, and take into account the size of the ice, some the size of Texas if not bigger.  So it is possible that the sea level will rise.

  3. I recently heard talk of the oceans expanding because of a sea temperature rise. This could possibly cause a much more real rise in water levels.

  4. Water expands when it is warm so that will also increase the water volume and hence sea level rise. Greenland and Antarctic ice caps are on land so their melt water will increase sea level

  5. The sooner they find another planet for us to inhabit the better but it will only be the good and the few that get the chance as usual. Only joking, the thing is not to allow all these things to get to you, you or I know nothing, only what we are told, don't waste time wandering just enjoy your life while you still have a planet to walk on. Good Luck.

  6. Well that would apply to the North in part but places like Greenland and Antarctica are land masses so the ice is not actually floating in the water.... When that melts it will add to the sea level..... Fact.

  7. The whole global warming scenario is being wildly exaggerated by politicians,as a means of extracting more taxes from us.The climate is not changing to anywhere near the extent that they say it is and even if it was ,extra taxation will do nothing to stop it.

  8. One problem is ice on land.  When that melts the water runs down to the sea. Another is that the ocean expands as it gets warmer.  Yes, that's a big deal.

  9. Antarctic Ice and Grrenland are actually land masses. Their ice is not floating on the sea. Hence when this ice melts it adds to the volume of water in the seas.

Also, global temperatures are rising. This means that the water in the seas and oceans will expand. This may be a small expansion, but given the volume of water it is a measurable one.

What most people don't realise is that the sea level varies from place to place over the Earth. Apart from the tides, underlying geology plays an important role in determining actual sea level. Sea level is lower closer to land masses (due to their gravitaional pull) and higher out at sea (where there are no large land masses). Also, sea level is higher on the equater... due to the effects of the Earth's rotation.
