The search for Houston Astros new GM begins – MLB News
With the dismissal of the president baseball operations Tal Smith and the general manager Ed Wade, the Houston Astros have already begun a search for a new general manager. The decision to dismiss the two senior figures forming the Astros hierarchy came
on Monday, November 28, after Houston businessman Jim Crane assumed control of the club.
The Astros’ CEO George Postolos was expected to make a complete overhaul. That the general manager and the president of the baseball operations for the club had to go was something that might not have been expected.
Nonetheless, as they have already been dismissed, Postolos said, the search for a new general manager will immediately begin.
"The search for a new general manager begins immediately. We are searching for a candidate who has the knowledge, skills and experience to build a winner and a strong commitment to player development in order to sustain success.” Tampa Bay general manager
and Houstonian Andrew Friedman, Gerry Hunsicker, the former Astros GM and Kim Ng the senior VP of baseball operation are the names that have come under considerations.
With such big names that the Astros have taken into consideration, the goal indeed is that of hiring someone who can add a renewed energy and competitiveness in a club which has for long not lived up to the expectations of the fans.
“Our goal is to consistently compete for a championship, and we know the first step towards that goal is to develop one of the top farm systems in baseball,” Postolos said. “We will hire the best candidate available to achieve our goal."
To achieve that goal, one that relates to compensate the inability of the Astros to qualify for the postseason this year, this shakeup in the hierarchy may turn out to be a prudent move. The names that have popped up other than the aforementioned ones are
David Forst from Oakland, Thad Levine and A.J. Preller.
All the names are indeed big. If anyone is called for an interview and he makes his way into the club, there are lots of expectations that the Astros will finally see in their upgrading.
