  2. Not sure what kind of test you're taking, but I would guess it refers actually to what "getting in the thick of things" actually means, which is to do your part and get in there where the action is going on.  So, (D) none of these is correct

    However, it could also be asking to describe the action words, which would still not be any of those definitions.

    You must realize that this pertains to some lesson you were previously taught.  It has to apply as they introduced it, which could mean you were being shown how to use short sharp sounds, or simply short words to write actions, but that is not something I could possibly know!
