Question:

The seven (7) social Evils?

I think these were said or written by Gandhi:

THE SEVEN SOCIAL EVILS

Wealth Without Work

Pleasure Without Conscience

Knowledge Without Character

Commerce Without Morality

Science Without Humanity

Worship Without Sacrifice

Politics Without Principles.

What do you think of these, and have you had any experience with them?

As always I ask this question with Metta

(((((May all be responsible for their actions)))))

Thank-you for answering

  1. They all make sense to me. You can see them all in everyday life. I have seen a few of them.

  2. The one that sticks out for me is "Politics Without Principles"

Politicians are responsible for wars, abortions, unwed mothers just to name a few

  3. 1.Yes, I have had this, but not through choice (neither by an action or ommission of mine).  If any amount of wealth comes to someone through automatic means and not through any work, what can a person do! However, it does not impress me and I prefer a modest existance. In my situation anyway, I cant see it as a social evil. However, if it refers more to a fatcat with a big cigar then yes I agree.

    2. Yes, had this, but not for a long time, wouldnt do it knowingly again, and I dont look back.

    3. Hmm, I dont understand 'character' in this context. Will think and edit.

    4. I see a lot in my industry, to a certain extent it will always go on but I think that people are more aware of this 'social evil' than any other on the list and the majority are now pulling together to make a difference. It is all progress in the right direction :o) Very important, in any case.

    5. No experience of it, but yes, very important.

    6. No experience of it. I have no current views.

    7. As with number 4, this does go on and yes, it is a social evil.

Thanks, I was very interested in point number 1. I have been considering this a lot lately. Again, from one of your questions, I have some food for thought!

    :o)

  4. Wealth Without Work = I have experienced this and probably will again. Of course I can rationalize it away with reasons of necessity but this is an evil that requires hard work to resist.

Pleasure Without Conscience = I have to consciously tell myself not to be conscious when in a pleasurable situation. When I was younger and out with friends on vacation I would have to remind myself to "let go" and not worry about the consequences. I rarely do that but for me it  makes the pleasure I do feel deserved.

Knowledge Without Character = No, not me; I'm the biggest character you'll ever see. Isn't it supposed to be knowledge without wisdom?

Commerce Without Morality = I see this happen all the time every day. There exists no profession I have more disdain for than the salesman. I've swindled a few folks in my day but overall I am an honest businessman.

Science Without Humanity = I see this as being rather the same as knowledge without character except that this is more like doing experiments on living feeling beings for the sake of science and knowledge no matter what it does to the being or beings. If it truly is for the greater good I suppose there's an argument but I am against it in general.

Worship Without Sacrifice = Simply the act of worship is a sacrifice in itself.

    Politics Without Principles. = LOL

    peace.
