The seventh seed Wah Ho Shon trounces Dicky Palyama in the round-of-16 in the German Open GP Gold
Korea’s Wah Ho Shon thrashed Dicky Palyama of Netherlands, in the round-of-16 of the German Open GP Gold 2011, at the indoor arena of Mulheim, Germany. The seventh seed Korean took 41 minutes to beat Palyama in straight sets. The Dutch, who defeated the
Israeli Shuttler, Misha Zilberman, in the round-of-32, failed to continue his winning run.
The number seven seed Korean remained in complete control of the game in the first half of the opening set, where he was leading by 11-6. After the break, the Dutch accelerated the pace of the game and narrowed the gap at 14-16. Shon changed his tactics
and kept the shuttle c**k low, the tactic put him in a dominating position.
Shon utilized his extensive experience and hard-to-earn skills to put the opponent down. His powerful smashes coupled with the spinning net shots earned him the remaining points and he finished the first game by 21-17.
In the second game, Palyama took a decent lead of 7-4 in the start but could not maintain it as the Korean turned the things against the Dutch. Till the interval, Shon was leading by a close margin of 11-10. After the one-minute-interval, the Korean started
to stretch the lead and remained successful in building a gap of 16-11 score.
A five-point gap at such crucial stage of the match always puts pressure on the trailing player. Same thing happened to Palyama, who made a few mistakes on some key points that gave the chance to the Korean to win the game by a 21-17 margin. The final score
of this 41-minute match was 21-17 and 21-17.
In the quarterfinal, Shon will be competing against the top seed Chinese, Lin Dan, who overwhelmed Hans Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark in straight games in the round of 16. The quarterfinal battle between these two seeded shuttlers will be great show as
both players are among the top seeds in the event of German Open GP Gold 2011.
