The sound on my tv won't work...?

I have one of those really old school big screens, the ones with the huge projectors in it. Well the sound went out but my boyfriend says it isn't the speakers...He tried replacing the rf modulator but that won't work either. He said that if we buy a surround sound system he can bypass the problem, anyone know for sure if that will work?

He is probably right on the speakers... they almost never stop working. He is suggesting what sounds like a reasonable solution, but of course there is no guarantee.

I would tend to invest the money for some new equipment. I would replace the whole TV if I were you.
