fungal feeding ecology is organized by 3 main groups, saprotrophic, parasitic, & mycorrhizal.

I need to know the source of nourishment for all three, but cannot seem to find the one for parasitics, or mycorrhizals

  1. parasitic organisms are organisms that live of something alive to maintain themselves alive for example : ringworms they live in our intestines and live off the food we eat.

  2. Saprotrophic fungi feed on dead organisms. Parasitic fungi feed on living tissues. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with plant roots.

  3. Parasitic fungi abound.  Ringworm is a skin fungus, while the Cordyceps species are fungi which are parasitic on insects in their immature stages living in the soil.

Mycorrhiza are fungi attached to the roots of the plant and help it take in moisture and nutrients through a network of tiny filaments called hyphae that spread through the soil, increasing the root mass 10 to 10,000 times. Plants feed the fungi in return.

  4. Parasites live off a living organism and get their nutrition from them.  A human baby could be considered a parasite, as it gets it's nourishment from it's mother before birth.  And ringworm lives on your skin, not in your intestines, so don't use that as an example.
