  1. It happens the week before Easter Sunday. Holy week.

What's it about? Christianity. Have a look at Youtube.

Seville is said to be the biggest and best holy week but there are processions everywhere in Andalucia.

Seville hotels are booked out and expensive so book early.

Think about going somewhere different like Sanlucar de Barrameda for holy week. Smaller, cheaper, more 'duende'.

  2. Hi.  Holy Week (Semana Santa) is held in Seville every April (Easter).  See this link for more information.  Well worth visiting!

  3. Semana Santa...or Holy Week in english, is the week prior to Easter Sunday... It does not have a fixed date, as Easter changes dates every year, usually it is during april, but sometimes it falls late in march. ..

The "tall cones" are called CAPIROTES, and are worn by the penitents who walk in the procession of their parish church. These persons all belong to a brotherhood (Hermandad) and each parish church has its own brotherhood usually bearing the name of the holy images that are processioned.

The "overall" is not an overall, but a religious habit, similar to those worn by priests or friars up to recent years.

The complete ensemble may be of different colours. Some are all black, but others are dark green, blue, wine coloured, and even some white.

Each colour also identifies the brotherhood it belongs to.

The religious fervor contained in these processions has lasted throughout the centuries.

Seville has the most famous, but all over Spain you will find processions all during Holy Week... Those in Valladolid are also well known, they are more solemn and silent. The ones in Andalusian cities are more demonstrative, the people being more outgoing.

The custom of religious processions dates back to medieval times. Basically they are to do penance for ones sins (that is why the persons inside the capirotes are called penitents). The processions may also be held on other occasions to ask a special favour of the saint or image of the Virgin Mary that is processioned.
