The specs for my Everio GZ-MG130 say that the AV port is "out-only".?

I was hoping to get a external microphone to help with filming in loud places, but is this impossible? Is there any way to hook a mic up with the USB port?

  1. If you need AV in, you need a camcorder that says it has that feature - in the manual. If you need to connect an external mic, you typically need the camcorder to have a mic-in jack.

No, there is no USB mic that will connect to a camcorder for capturing audio.

The JVC Everio camcorders that have a mic-in jack are listed at the JVC accessoires site - specifically on the mic page:

Be advised that just because you use an external mic, that does not mean the audio recorded in loud places will sound better - you are still having to deal with the auto mic-gain and loud audio will overdrive the mic gain - and it will clip and sound muddy.

What you need is manual audio control... The least expensive camcorders I know of with a mic-in jack AND full manual audio control are the Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9.
