The speedometer in my 1996 dodge neon works sometimes and does not work at other times????

IS it the speed sensor??? and if so where is that located and how do you change it????

  1. I have had several of the older neons and have the same problem.Every time I had to replace the circuit board on the backside of the gauge cluster (speedometer, fuel gauge, engine temp, ect.) to fix the problem. New ones are very expensive but being such a common problem I did not want to buy a used one that was doing the same thing


  2. it probably is the speed sensor and its located on the   transmission,you need to have it scanned first though to verify that's it,it could be the back of the dash causing some problems with it,older neon's had that problem,usually  a speed sensor wont fix its self,id check the back of the dash for a cracked circuit first,if it doesn't give any trouble codes from having it scanned,good luck on it.

  3. A common problem on Neons of your vintage.  What happens a lot of times is that the circuit board needs to be re-soldered ( or replaced as the previous post mentioned ).
