The sport of cycling is far too beautiful and will never die, Fabian Cancellara
Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan viewed the Centrum van de Ronde van Vlaanderen, a museum especially built for the Tour of Flanders.
The cyclist succeeded during the 2010 version of the Belgian race and was invited at the event to honour the Grand Opening at the new supporters club.
The Swiss also shared his thoughts on one of the most disturbing incident that has shaken the sport of cycling, the USADA investigation into Lance Armstrong and his previous World Tour side, Team USPS.
However, Cancellara is positive that cycling will make its way out of the deep water, “We are going through a difficult period. But cycling will never die, this sport is much too beautiful,” he told Sporza.be.
"We no longer have to go back to the time when doping was like drinking water," he said. "I will not go into details about what has happened in the past. I am not a judge".
The 31-year-old marked his professional debut with Team Mapei-Quick Step in 2001 and stayed with the team by the end of 2002 season.
He rode for Team Fassa Bortolo through 2003-05 seasons and moved to the Danish side, Team CSC in 2006.
Cancellara spent a maximum number of five years with the side and accepted an offer from Team Leopard Trek in 2011.
The Luxembourg side announced its merger with Team RadioShack to form Team RadioShack-Nissan in the 2012 season and only the top cyclists from both the sides were given the contracts.
Fabian made it through the final team squad and served the World Tour debutant side, Team RadioShack-Nissan throughout the season.
He could not perform to his abilities and his only commendable performances in the current season include first place finishes at the National Time Trial Championships, Strade Bianche and a second place finish at the Milan-San Remo.
Former Olympic time trial champion also bagged stages at the Tour de France 2012 and the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012 to wrap up a rather unsatisfactory season.
"I'm looking forward to 2013, I have been at a camp in the Alps at about 3500 meters. That was the symbolic start of my new season," he noted about the season ahead.
"Mentally I am certainly ready, and everything is good on physical level. I want to be there at 100%”.
It will be interesting to see if Cancellara manages to find the right momentum to make up for his reduced performance in the 2012 season.
