Question:

The state of womens Tennis?

I am worried to quality of womens tennis is declining. In recent years we have lost hugely popular competitors such as Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis. Aswell as the loss of form from Mauresmo, The absence from injury of Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati and Myskina, And the comitment of such talents as the Williams sisters. Justin Henin has dominated womens tennis and noone had got anywhere near her. Kim Clijsters was always in Grand slam semi-finals and Mauresmo and Hingis were always dark horses. With the absence of these players I worry of the state of the WTA tour. Womens tennis now looks like it has and will take back-ward steps and be less interesting for tennis fans.

Contrastingly, Mens tennis is looking promising with many young players such as Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Del Potro, Gasquet, Berdych, Bagdatis, and Ancic aswell as expierenced pros like Safin,Hewitt, Canas, Moya, Gonzalez and of course Federer. Am I right to be worried about the state of Womens tennis?

  1. I am a bit concerned as well although I think it's just a phase that the tour is going thru right now.

I watched one of the challenger events that went on in Las Vegas at the same time the men's tournament on the ATP Tour: The Tennis Channel Open.  This challenger event that went on was one for the Women's side and there was a young woman that played for the final against Camille Pin that was really good.  This young woman was from the Agassi Academy and has a lot of promise.  Her name is Aisha (can't think of her last name right now) and she's 18 years old.

  2. I still think there is plenty of good young talent rising up on the women's side.  The upcoming tournaments should prove interesting.

  3. I agree with you. I used to like women's tennis better in the days of Seles,Graff,Sanchez Vicario, etc etc. We saw some real rivalries then and some great tennis but little by little it has been getting boring.

Now that Clijsters and Henin are gone(my last current favourites), I have a hard time distinguishing one player from another. I hate Serena's game. Venus is a little more interesting to watch.

Has Mauresmo quit too? I was always fascinated by her game - capable of sublime tennis and also of the very worst sort of upset.

Right now the rivalries in men's tennis are the thing to watch. There are three top players, each of whom plays a very different game and has a different personality. There are a host of challengers with possibilities in every match of upsetting the favourites. It's just more exciting.

Women's tennis has become a faded photocopy of men's tennis. The women play strong "masculine" tennis. If I want to watch that kind of game,I prefer the real thing - men's tennis.

I think it's a shame that women have stopped using strategy and will power and technique in favour of strength-watching their matches  is like watching 2nd class men.

Henin was different but now she has gone. I'm afraid you are right to be worried.
