The story of Sebastian Vettel – Cruising through ills and odds to be the last man standing
The new world champion Sebastian Vettel believes that he has come a long way over the year after having faced immense media criticism and some very unfortunate incidents all through the 2010 Formula One season.
The 23-year-old, and now the youngest world champion, has given some very strong performances in the last few races of the season. In the last five races, he has bagged victory in three, while stood second in another. The driver has covered a very tough
journey in the most amazing and spectacular manner.
Winning the battle of five fast and furious men of the world seemed simply impossible for Vettel at several points. There had been weeks when it felt that his fight was over. Yet he kept bouncing back week after week until he finally embraced triumph at
a tug that looked far from over until the last moment.
Only in August the German was 31 points adrift the championship lead and stood as the most criticised man after the Belgian Grand Prix. Owing to Vettel’s poor racing Jenson Button of McLaren had to walk out of the race without having earned any points. After
the incident, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh, called the Red Bull a “crash kid” along with more severe criticism for his faulty driving.
However, only after a few months gone, the situation surprisingly reversed. When asked about the harsh condemnation he received earlier Vettel admitted that it was a very tough patch. He thanked his team who stood by him and supported him in some of the
incidents this season which were very discouraging and discomforting. The driver proclaimed that the assistance and strong back up of Red Bull helped him come out of difficult situation and go ahead with confidence.
While talking to the Sunday’s press conference he said, “I had the clear target, going into this season, to win the championship and I was very focused, working very hard, harder than before. Maybe mid-season... I don't think I lost the focus but maybe a
bit tense, as you said. With the way things went and the races developed, it wasn't always easy but to come back, after what happened in Spa, which I think was a racing incident.”
He continued telling, “It wasn't easy at that time, with a lot of people talking bad things and trying to knock us down, but that's when you realise who your friends are, who belongs to you and who is supporting you.”
He further accepted that there have been moments earlier in the year when he thought that things weren’t working out for him. However, the young lad was happy to exclaim that no matter what the circumstances, he never gave up and kept fighting until he came
out as the last man standing.
Initially, Vettel was one of the most unlucky racers as many times race wins simply slipped out of his hands like the Bahrain and Australian Grand Prix, and later in Spa due to mechanical problems. Also, the wheel-to-wheel race with his teammate Mark Webber
in Turkey was ended drastically as the two collided into each other. The last and the worst of all mishaps took place in Korea as the driver’s engine blew up at the final laps when he was heading for a certain victory.
While recalling the ills and odds of the season, the driver believes that after going through all this he has been further trained to take the rough along with the smooth. The experience has strengthened the driver to stay firm with his beliefs and dreams
no matter what the situation turns out to be.
