Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, goddess of seasons.  Persephone represents springtime and flowers.  Wherever she walks on earth flowers pop up.  Hades, down in the underworld was captured by her gaiety and beauty.  Since he was only allowed up to Olympus during the winter solstice he never really saw her.  So he decided to kidnap her and make her his bride.  Back then there was no winter, because winter only happened when Demeter was sad.  

So Hades split the earth open wen Persephone was running on earth, one day, and captured her.  No one noticed her leave but a little pig herder. Demeterer was distraught and brought winter on earthgrievingng for her daughter.  

Down in the underworld Persephone was decked with the mosbeautifulul gems, but she wasn't happy.  She wanted it to be spring and the only plants down here was the unhappy garden in Hades palace.  The only trees were poplar anpomegranatete trees.Meanwhilele the pig herder saDemeterer grieving and told her of Persephdisappearingring in the underworld.  Demeter demanded to Zeus that if henotd npt bring her daughter back she would never give earth a good harvest again, and the earth would wilt and die.  

Persephone knew better then to touch the food of the dead, and she was happy to be released when Zeus relented and let Hermes rescue her.  But Hades knew that Persephone would return to because she had apsetmindly tasted the food of the dead.  She had eaten a few kernels of a pomogranit.  If you eat the food of the dead then you are bound to return to the underworld.  

Thus Zues ruled that Persohne spend as many months as she had eaten kernels, down int he udnerworld.  When she was down there demter grieved and brought winter to earth.  But she taught people to save seeds and harvest to prepare for the winter when perspone left.
