and If the 2nd story is only for storage, do you go with 2x4 or 2x6 bottom stud walls.

  1. 2x6

  2. Depending on the area you live in the codes vary.  Most code now requres 2 x 6 studs not because 2 x 4 is not strong enough but to allow more space for insulation.

Of course this may not be the case in areas with huge anual snow loads.

  3. 2 by 4

  4. Usually 2x4's,but new homes code requires 2x6 stud.I would go with 2x4's.

  5. Usually 2x4 the ceiling or second story floor would be determined the size by a span table the longer the span the larger the lumber unless the second story you use a truss type beam to meat beam span requirements and still have a level floor for the second story. Hope this makes since.

  6. It can be 2x4s or 2x6s. Contrary to other posts, 2x6 is not a code requirement in all areas, though it may be in some. The advantage of using 2x6 framing is not due to structural issues. Rather, the additional thickness allows more insulation in the walls. 2x4 studs spaced 16" on center are plenty strong for all walls of a 2 story house.

Builders generally go with 2x6 or 2x4 walls--they don't typcally mix the two (in other words, it's unusual to frame lower walls with 2x6 and upper with 2x4). Here's an article that will help you understand house framing:

  7. depends

  8. 2'x4's are hefty enough if put on 16" centers and a double top plate is used - both on first and 2nd floors.

The key element is you should use a stronger wall sheathing such as 1/2" o.s.b. everywhere, and install it such as the horizontal top joints allow the next sheet you stack on top to lap over the lower wall, floor joist band, and into the next sheet on top.

2" x 6" will help with added r value but is not required for strength, there is plenty of vertical strength in the 2" x 4"s

  9. Walls are normally 2x4's. The only time you see 2x6's is for exterior walls that are used with a thicker insulation.
