The Women’s Volleyball Team of Guatemala is keeping a good run in the XVI Women’s Central American Volleyball Cup, which has been organized by NORCECA. The Guatemalan team has played two matches in the tournament so far and they managed to finish on the
podium in both combats. In the first match on November 29, Guatemala was challenged by Honduras. The Guatemalan players exhibited a spectacular game and pulled off straight sets’ victory over Honduras.
Guatemala vs. El Salvador 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, and 25-0)
Guatemala clashed with El Salvador in the next match on November 30, 2010. El Salvador’s team totally failed in front of strong Guatemalan squad and ended up with a humiliating defeat. The victory signaled Guatemala’s participation in the 2011 NORCECA Continental
Championship.
Guatemala opened the fire in first set. The powerful serves and deadly aces jumpstarted their score in no time. Tiffany Villfranco provided a big boom to Guatemala’s score with her speedy spikes. The delivery of amazing cut shots totally flabbergasted El
Salvador’s team. They tried to poise their feet in the court but hard-hitting of Guatemala made it quite difficult job for them. El Salvador suffered the set back in the early phase of the game. The strong lead of Guatemala carved them under pressure and players
committed too many mistakes. Guatemala secured the first set with a margin of 11 points.
The second set of the match brought more misery for the El Salvador’s team. The captain girl of El Salvador, Gabriela Martinez was the only one who tried to roll off the ball in Guatemala’s half and she was successful in few of her attempts. However, it
was certainly not enough to bring them out of danger zone. Guatemala continued attacking and added quick points. Rut Gomez worked out nice under hand shots and found the perfect gaps in El Salvador’s half. The ball just needed the touch of her hands and it
perfectly landed in the opponents’ side. Guatemala comfortably covered the length of second set and posted 25-9.
El Salvador was dragged under tons of pressure and failed to put with the heavy strike of Guatemala. The opening two sets of the game slipped through their hands but third set proved to be real disaster for them. Guatemala’s team had attained a perfect rhythm
and attacked with full power. They heavily influenced El Salvador and didn’t allow them to score any point in the third set. Guatemala attacked them from various angles and closed the set at 25-0. El Salvador received a shameful defeat, while Guatemala marched
as winners.
The top spiker of Guatemala, Tiffany Villfranco devastated El Salvador’s defence and stole the show by adding 14 points. The explosive spiking and strong blocks by Tiffany earned her a huge amount of applause. Likewise, Guatemala’s Rut Gomez outshined on
the scene. She registered 10 points for Guatemala and made it possible for her team to win. After the match, she talked to media and disclosed her thoughts. Rut said, “Our initial objective is to qualify to the NORCECA Championship and we know that the chances
are there and we can do it, so we are going to give all our effort to reach that goal.”
In El Salvador’s team, Gabriela Martinez clipped 10 points and struggled for the better status of her team. However, her efforts didn’t work out as the team lost all three sets of the game. The captain girl was determined to cover the deficit in coming matches.
She said, “We lacked concentration. We know we can play better and the rest of our matches will show it.”
