  1. good choice.

the SV650 will be a little taller than the GS500, but not by enough to keep you from touching the ground.

info about the bike? off the top of my head:

about 72hp, top speed just below 130mph (the speedo will read faster - trust me, you're only doing ~128), great engine, around 415 lbs (wet), good handling, very practical powerband.  The naked is geared a little lower than the faired version, so it's actually faster to 60 IIRC, but at top speed, the aerodynamics of the faired model allow it to top out slightly higher (135ish).

the SV650 is about as big as i would want to go for a first bike, but they are really great.

If i had to own only 1 bike for the rest of my life, the SV650 would be it. (i'd go faired, but the naked is nice too)

  2. The SVs are good bikes. V-twin power is strong and comes on smoother than the inline bikes. Everybody I've talked to that is riding one loves it. It fits a large range of rider sizes, is fairly light, has good brakes, great lighting.

I'm thinkin about buying an SV1000 as a commuter/sport tourer bike

  3. No, the SV is a really nice bike, low seat height etc., and I'd thoroughly recommend it as a first 'proper' bike.

Ride it until you fancy something with a fairing & a bit more speed, you'll love it!

  4. i'm 5'7" 180 and my 2000 sv650 fit me perfect. Your best bet is to ckout sv650 forum. www.sv650.org

  5. It's very highly regarded and consistently gets positive reviews and makes top-first lists from magazines and motorcycle websites.

Also important: Insurance companies treat it as a standard, so you won't have to pay Gixxer level insurance rates.
