The tale of Dubai’s playoff one-shot penalty
Ian Poulter walked home as a runner-up, whereas, Robert Karlsson lifted the trophy in a beautiful sunset on the Earth Golf Club in Dubai.
The purple-orange sky complimented the crystal-balled trophy so well that it became hard to take eyes away from its beauty. Karlsson held the trophy in his hands along with the cheque of £776,686 to demonstrate his victory in Dubai World
Championship. Meanwhile, Poulter faced the ground regretting the third shot that led to a penalty.
On the second play-off hole against Karlsson Poulter had an incident, which resulted in a penalty. Poulter was on the brink of taking his next shot when the ball dropped from the marker, which had his son’s name carved on it. Scared for the after results,
Poulter asked for the referee and Andy McFee was called upon to inquire. According to him, any accidental transformation of the ball marker, which occurred before or after the marking of the ball led to one-stroke penalty.
This gave a huge blow to Poulter’s morale and the player bogeyed the playoff hole giving way to Karlsson to take over. Poulter had a fair idea that Karlsson will not miss the chance to par and this is what happened. Karlsson parred the hole, which he twice
birdied and bogeyed in the first round.
Karlsson won the title along with the top most rank in European golf surging to newer heights. The 41-year-old was surprised at his victory.
He disclosed his sentiments in front of the press and said, “It was a strange day to say the least. To start birdie-birdie-eagle is not what you expect to happen when you are three behind. Then there was the one-shot penalty. It is not the way you want to
win, but these things happen in golf. The rules are there for a reason, but some of them look very hard at stages. In one way that's the purity of the game."
On the other hand, Poulter was frustrated with the ending as the world number eight was expecting a better start for the next year. However, fate took him somewhere else and Poulter was not happy with that.
While speaking to the press, Poulter said, "It's a shame it's just ended the way it has and it's not a consolation for me that Robert holed the putt in any case. It is a strange rule because if I had dropped the ball on the middle of the marker and it had
not moved there is no penalty, but I should not drop my ball on it. It has been my lucky marker since the start of the year and has got my kids' names on. There are always positives, but right now I'm not seeing them."
Poulter jumped from 11th place to eighth with a victory in Hong Kong and he could have overridden Martin Kaymer, who is the number three in world and number one in Europe. According to earlier press releases, Poulter had bid that he will win the
championship in Dubai and will overthrow Tiger Woods along with Lee Westwood. However, to his despise the dream could not come true and Poulter had to accept his defeat.
On the other hand, the veteran whom Poulter wanted to replace dropped a shot on the 12th and failed to pick a birdie on the 18th. Lee Westwood could have been part of the playoff, but two bogeys in the final round vaulted him to nothing
better than third spot.
This is it for the last minutes details of the playoff battle that took place at the 18th hole on Earth Course in Jumeirah Golf Estate, Dubai. Ian Poulter lost the playoff and Karlsson took the massive bonus of £776,686 home with a memory yet to stay until
the next race to Dubai.
